[…] Night begins to fall. Ouahid and I hurry to Mokattam Mountain to see the start of the piece. Once we get there, we feel the same excitement as the first day, but also apprehension when we see that the first hours of work aren’t as quite as effective as we expected. Marking the first lines has taken me a long time; I need to use a new working technique. My lines are less spontaneous than on a normal facade. There’s a new mathematical dimension to this challenge and everything must be perfectly calculated. There’s no room for improvisation. Manshiyat Nasr is spread before us. The last sunlight of the day reminds us of the colours of the piece as an orange glow covers the buildings. The first lines look minuscule compared to the immensity of the surface to be covered. I realise the challenge I’ve set for myself. […] – Perception, eL Seed. 2018 Book launch October 4th – #perception #StAthanasius #Cairo #zaraeeb

[…] I remember that moment when everyone was silent, admiring and gazing at this spectacle; every second was enchanted. It was as if time had stood still. We were so happy to finally see my dream, our dream, that had become a reality. Suddenly we heard a shout: ‘Ya Faouzi, Ya Faouziiiii!’ When we heard this, we couldn’t believe our eyes or ears; even Uncle Braheem had come to see the piece, the man who hadn’t been up the mountain for 10 years. Dressed in his finest galabiya, and a long scarf, he came to see the new face of his building. He broke into a smile that no words can describe. He looked at the work and the light, focusing on his building’s façade that appeared in the foreground of the installation. He was proud to see his building completely repainted and covered by the majority of the piece. He was silent for a few seconds, then turned to me with a big smile and took me in his arms. He told us that this work was a project of peace and had brought people together and then he left. […] Perception, eL Seed. 2018 – Book launch on October 4th at @themuseumofmodernart

Perception is a personal account of the journey to complete my most ambitious artwork – an anamorphic mural over 50 buildings in Cairo’s Manshiyat Nasr district. Inside the book is the story of the project, several interviews with members of the neighbourhood and hundreds of photographs charting the extraordinary process from beginning to end. The first 500 copies are limited editions, which include an insert of recycled paper sourced from within the community and I have painted the covers of the books. Each book bears a single part of the mural. The full image was painted over the first 500 books so that when the books are placed together, they complete the jigsaw. Have your piece of the puzzle and reserve your limited edition copy. You can have the piece shipped to you or else you can come and pick it up in person, either at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) on October 4, 2018 for the official launch or from eL Seed’s studio in Dubai. Part of the proceeds of sales from the books will go back into the Manshiyat Nasr community, either towards sourcing materials for the school inside the neighbourhood or for other charities set up within the district.
